negociosI think this post works for everyone in any type of business, Not only graphic design. It’s really important for you to be able to communicate with your client, not only verbally but in a way that your client what you mean and the idea behind your words. There are many times, when a professional, due to his/her knowledge, starts talking to the client too technically. Thinking that the client really speaks the “slang”, and this is very wrong. Because they feel threatened, or they might even think that we’re not interested in their project.

Here are the essential marketing skills for any freelancer:

Blog. It’s been said many times before, but the blog is the new resume. If you don’t have a blog, learn how to start one up. And don’t just rant about politics and talk about your cat. Make your blog look professional, write about things that would look good to potential clients, and offer your services to others (with contact info, of course). If you are a designer, be sure that the design is clean and creative. If you are a photographer, the photos should knock them out. If you’re a writer, have only your best writing on your blog. In all cases, have a simple, clean layout with well-written words. If you’re not good at this yet, constantly learn and refine. Look at other professional blogs for inspiration, then tweak. Then edit some more.

The Pros and Cons of Freelance Flexibility

prosconsfreelance.jpgThere are the obvious benefits of self-employment, like no half-hour time limit on lunch breaks, assuming you start work before lunch, or a computer timing every second your spend in the bathroom. But lately, it’s the smaller things that have left me feeling more free.

I’m not forced to use a computer set up the way someone in management told the IT department to do it, everything is set the way I like it and no web sites are blocked by a company. Thinking back of working in cubicles, I remember some fierce restrictions. One place I worked in forbid the use of web-based e-mail (What?!? I can’t use Gmail here?!?)
