Communication:
To be able to earn your money you need to prove to others that you can communicate effectively, whether it’s in an interview you have or with co-workers. Modern graphic designers have to communicate with many people from different positions and even customers to print in our designs their message.
Utility:
The thing of outermost importance in a design is it’s utility. The design has to be good looking, but also useful. These two characteristics are not easy to combine, but once you do it, you’ll have great success.
Technical knowledge:
Anything new that you learn will help you one day in a way or another. If you’re a web page designer for example, you don’t spend all day long doing codes, it’s always good to think outside the box and see other things that constitute the page.
Project management:
This is really important specially when we’re doing a big project. The designer that’s qualified enough to manage multiple tasks, will be above to the ones only receiving orders and doing 1 thing at a time.
Marketing:
If you have marketing skills you’ll be able to attract more clients, you’ll start developing that “click” that will make you have better bonds with customers.

Many of us think that been a freelancer is the best thing that could happen in the world. Nothing like working from home. Been able to watch TV and having no one bossing you around. But not everything that shines is gold. Here I present you the most common freelancer myths. When we work at home we can sleep all day long:
If you’re working from your house doesn’t mean that you don’t have anything to do at all. This is why you have to be really responsible and dedicated, to avoid all temptations.
Working from home is non-productive:
Many people think that because they spend long hours in front of the PC, it means that we’re doing nothing. This is far from been real, if you’re in an office for example, it doesn’t mean you’re doing something productive either.

As we all know, starting a business is not easy. And many of us have many responsibilities that we have to fulfil. And at the same time we have to live the adventures of freelance. Some people would rather have a “safe job” than “risky” freelancing activities.
Having a night shift:
It might be weird at the beginning, but remember that most of the interviews with your customers will be at office hours, no one will work extra hours to wait for you.
Look for a casual job:
A casual job is the one that provides a flexible schedule. This will be great for you because you’ll have time to do your freelance jobs and still keep it up with your daily job.
Use your free time:
Many jobs will not allow you to do your “freelancies” while been there. If you have some free time, use it wisely.
Take your own lunch:
It might sound weird, but going to the closest restaurant, waiting in the line to your food to be ready may take it’s time. Time that you could use doing your freelance designs.
Use technology for your advantage:
If your daily job gives you the opportunity to have Internet, or you can use cellphones, take good advantage of this.

One of hardest things to do is to promote your own art. Many designers fear doing this because: NOBODY KNOWS ME. Relax! There are many ways to let people know you-
1. Blog: this is the best and most of time free-promoting engine.
2. Send E-mails to your family and friends: let them know what type of work you’re now doing (do not SPAM).
3. Send publications: try to find clients anywhere, and to get hired just give your %101. Give your best and some more, so you get good critics and future references.
4. Be a welcome writer: If you go for the Blog option, it’s very likely that many people won’t know about you, or how good your articles are. This is why many people start writing for other blogs so they become more famous.
5. Cooperate: Remember that NOT everything is money in the world of publicity, if you help someone by giving him/her one of your designs, this will also be advertisement for you.
6. Do alliances with other freelancers: The more the merrier.
7. Teach: Do not be selfish, transmit your knowledge and you’ll also learn as well.
8. Join organizations.
9. Create a “buzz”: make people talk about you, call other’s attention. Think Paris Hilton.
10. Contact potential customers.
