Who is your client?

Friday, September 14th, 2007

Many of you will answer me: the person that pays my bills.

Big mistake!
In the designing world, is really important for you to know who your real client is. Because many times when you work in a graphic studio or graphic design company, we meet people that we consult, for the approval or rejection of a certain design, and these people are not the client. In the majority of the cases, we might even speak about top executives, that are the ones in charge of transmitting the messages to the real client.

This is why you should always know who your client really is, and how many people have to approve your design before it reaches your real client hands.

OK then, but how do we assign in graphic designing: Who is your client?
We could say that it’s the person that handles the decisions over your design, for the good and also for the bad. Is the person that evaluates, judges and approves your art. Keep in mind, in order for you client to approuve your design (the on the designer thinks is the best for him) it’s important to control the creative process, and that you understand the message that the client wants to transmit.

Control over the creative process

To become a successful designer, it’s really important for you to have total control over the creative process.

It is recommendable that when it comes the time to present your ideas, you need to do it in a certain manner so that your client can understand and grasp a clear idea of your art and motives. This way your client is mostlikely going to approve your art without major trouble. For this to happen, it’s very important for you to know your clients and what are their needs and objectives.

Carrying a message

For a graphic designer, there’s nothing more challenging that finding himself/herself in front of a blank piece of paper. Since our job is to fill the space in between, and it’s not filling it for fun. This space must be filled with something inspiring, it has to be influential and new.

The key secret for creating a very good idea, influential and innovator is starting from zero. You need to think with a clear and stress-free mind, without external influence. There same thing happens to our clients, if they come to us with an open mind, ready to listen to new ideas, the final outcome will be a really good design.

Just remember, you always need to know and understand the audience you expose your art to, and it’s main objective.

Warm up your ideas!

All the designs that are innovative and successful are the ones that have a clear message and objective. If you spend the right time analyzing, asking and searching the objectives and messages that you want to transmit, you’ll notice how the ideas will come flowing right away to you, without breaking a sweat.

The creative process seems to be complicated, in fact there’re many factors that can influence the success or failure of your art.

Some clients might even push you with a specific type of designing pattern already establish by the company. The designer is sometimes limited to use only one technique or tendency when designing. Always remember that when you go to print out your work, you might find a few problems with it.
