Does gender influence the design?

Monday, February 25th, 2008

In certain jobs, there are stereotypes; like for example, we always think that a secretary has to be a woman, but nowadays we know that there are also men doing these jobs without problems.Have you ever thought, but it might happen that some people think that an X design had to be made by a man and a Y design had to be made by a woman? This reminds me the time when a professor of mine challenged the men in the class to do a design of a baby doll for little girls, while girls had to do a design for a boys.

He used to say that these activities were necessary, because in this business you don’t know who you are designing for. I honestly believe that the gender doesn’t affect the final resolution or quality of the design.

Doing some team work

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

Team work will help you achieve all your goals. In order to develop great ideas when doing team work, it’s very important to keep a certain points clear, so success can be achieved as soon as possible. All should know the subject to develop. Even if it doesn’t sound very logical, you’d be amazed of the number of people that sit down for a meeting without a clue of the subjects they are about to discuss.

All the members of the team must have the same amount of participation. Nobody is nobody’s boss.

There are no bad ideas. All ideas and thoughts should be considered, even if they sound crazy at first, great things came out of “crazy thoughts” before they were discovered.

Keeping a record of the ideas. Record your brainstormings or write them down.

Silence is the worst enemy. If nobody speaks, no ideas are flowing.

Interruptions are banned. Let others speak up their minds, let them finish their ideas and then you start talking.

Start the meeting when everybody is wide awake. Make your meetings at middle of the morning before noon, when most of the members in the meeting are active and not sleepy.

The 10 most common mistakes in SEO

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

Talking about SEO, I’ve found myself with Search Engine Watch. Here I found a very interesting article about SEO, according to their experiences, from the most common mistakes that happen in SEO.
They are:

  • A bad information structure
  • Poor useability
  • Internal link bad management
  • Hiding the content of the web page
  • Incorrect site addressing
  • Bad titles and sub-titles
  • Bad content
  • Replics from other sites
  • Flash all over the place
  • The same keywords for all the articles of the web site.

The Best way to use Flash, according to Google

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

There has always been a controvesy around the sites that are designed with Flash and their indexation in Google. There are many opened questions like: Will my content be fully indexed? What choices do I have to make it fully indexed?, etc.

As many of us know by now, Google is the major Search Engine that exists. Reason why we all want to be there. And of course, we all want to be indexed, so we don’t lose a possible customer.

Google tells us that Flash is a visual device. And the Googlebots have no eyes. It’s true that the Googlebots can read the content in Flash, and even extract the content and links from Flash. The structure itself is lost. If the content, on the other hand, is in the graphic object, then since the Googlebots cannot “see”, this content will be lost.

Google presents the next steps to solve this problem:

Use flash only when needed. Use Flash as a complement, not as everything in your site.

Do 2 menus, one in Flash and the other in HTML. So any user can log into the web page without been forced to download Flash.

Non Flash version of the site. Let the user choose what he/she wants to see. Let the Googlebots get all the info.

How much should I charge for a web site design?

Monday, February 18th, 2008

One question posted by many that can have many different answers. It’s true that for this there is no ultimate truth, many countries have different rates.

What I could do for you would be to give you some hints of the points to take in consideration when taking this decision:

Your reputation as designer, we know that if many people have recommended you, the customer will be willing to pay a good amount of money for your design

Remind the customer this is a good investment, some might think you’re charging too much money for it. Remind your customer that this will give his/her company a global presentation, which is really important for international customers.

Take in consideration the time it took you to create the page, every customer is different and they all want something special and different

Stipulate the time it might take you to create the site, some customers are easier than others. Gas is very expensive, so keep in mind all the little things it took you for your design to happen.

Maintenance, maybe the most important thing, don’t be one of those designers that disappears after the design is completed.
