How to define a “successful” web site?

Sunday, March 2nd, 2008

It’s true that a design for a web page has pretty, it’s not the most important thing for the user. Even when this affects the user, given that this is the first impression he/she will remember of the site. If the design is confortable, the user will stay there, but even more when the site is user-friendly. Trust me, there are millions of web sites out there with highly complicated navigation ways, and people don’t like to break a sweat when surfing.

What do you think will make people come back to your site? It’s the content. The very same thing that make the Googlebots come back to your site, it’s just the same things your readers will do. A site with good content, and daily updated will make people come back. It’s important to know that people like to visit interesting and informative web sites, but never a web site that was last updated 5 years ago!

Good tutorials from Computer Arts

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Written by: elBarbon!

This is the first time I ever get to write for ARTEgami, I would like to talk to you about one of my favorite sites that talks about tutorials, is the web site of an english magazine called Computer Arts, in this web site they have a full section dedicated for tutorials. This section is divided in several categories, Photoshop & 2D; Web & New Media y 3D & Animation. At this very moment they have around500 tutorials split in 3 sections, each of them downloadable from PDF.

There’s another thing that I would like to highlight from this website, all the tutorials were written by important designers and photgraphers like Derek Lea, Susanne Paschke, Waste Studio, etc, etc, just to mention a few.

Here you have one image from this tutorial for you to get an idea of what it’s about.

25 bad habits from designers

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Here’s a very interesting list of things we do as designers, there are some things here we all could improve:

  • Taking constructive critisism personally
  • We don’t know Paula Scher, Milton Glaser, Paul Rand & friends.
  • Not been updated in the world of design
  • Not having any manual
  • Not charging enough for our projects
  • Not using contracts
  • Too many freebies
  • Not asking for half of the payment before starting to do a design
  • Low quality fonts in our designs
  • Using Comic Sans
  • Too many fonts for the same design
  • We forget that blank spaces are friends of ours
  • Not doing enough drafts
  • Not using the ruler
  • Relaying too much on technology
  • Using low quality images
  • Not designing the logo in vectors
  • Not learning the keyboard shortcuts
  • Not having enough backups
  • Not having +8 hours of sleep at night.

A cliche design

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Most certainly you have heard the term: Cliché. And you have wondered what is it?

This happens when you start the graphic design career.

The term cliché refers to an idea that has been overused. And some people say it loses strength or attraction when using it. When you use a cliché you can be described as a not highly creative person. An example of cliché is using a light bulb to represent an idea, a heart for love, etc.
